What to expect
An electrician will test what's there, explain what they've found and agree the price before starting. For bigger jobs like a new consumer unit or a rewire, you'll get a certificate at the end, which is worth keeping for when you sell.
Small jobs take an hour or two. A consumer unit is usually a day. A rewire is usually 4 to 8 days.

Do I need to be home?
For most jobs, yes, or have someone let them in. The power will need to be off for part of the time on bigger jobs.
Will I get a certificate?
New circuits, consumer units and rewires should come with an electrical certificate and be notified to building control. Ask for the paperwork, it's normal.
My electrics keep tripping. Is that dangerous?
Tripping usually means a safety device is doing its job. Unplug things, reset it, and if it trips again, get it checked rather than taping the switch up.
