What to expect
A plasterer will check how sound the walls are and tell you if a skim will do or if it needs hacking off. Fresh plaster needs a week or two to dry before painting, and a mist coat first.
A room skim is usually a day. A full replaster is 2 to 3 days per room.

Skim or replaster?
If the plaster is firmly stuck, a skim is usually enough. If it sounds hollow or crumbles, it needs replacing.
Can I paint straight away?
No. Give it at least a week, then use a watered-down mist coat first.
Do I need to empty the room?
It helps a lot. Anything left in will need covering.
